When
we approximate a measurement, we are not looking for an exact measurement.
We are trying to estimate the length or area of an object. When we
approximate the length or area of an object, we do not use rulers.
To
approximate, or estimate, the length or area of an object we use a
benchmark. To use a benchmark we take a smaller object that we know
the size of to measure a larger object of unknown size.
